Lately, I started enjoying #periodseries. They make me curious about how things were back in those centuries. I know that not all period movies/series are based on the real events and even the ones who are, the word “based” is emphasized as not everything is true. But even so, I try to imagine how things were, and I even get interested in doing some research on the internet to learn more.
I was never very interested in history, so I don’t know a lot of facts or how things evolved or the stories behind the great inventions. But while watching these series, I became curious and fascinated by how civilization evolved. I enjoy comparing those periods with the present and analyzing the differences in my head, good or bad. I feel proud as a human, with the accomplishments and the fights won for things we enjoy today. Not all were proud moments of course but I prefer to focus on the positives.
I am currently watching #TheGildedAge , and while I am very impressed with the scenery and the marvelous houses, I become curious and started reading about that “golden period”. Turns out it is called that because it was a period of prosperity and inventions. New York was becoming more populated and places like the MET and the Central Train Station were built. It was the period when the phone was invented as well. The series focuses on how status was of the most importance, and you see some characters trying to fight it. You see Unions being created for the first time and how workers demanded rights that we never think about now-a-days, like the 8-hour work, breaks and minimum wages. Well, some of us do not think about them anyways…
You see gender inequality at its high, and how some women support it while others are slowly fighting it. While trying not to fall into the sides of society, they also acquire jobs and assume roles that are a no-no at those times. On the other hand, you see romance, chivalry and other values that are fading away these days.
Watching those period series or movies is a nice break from reality. It makes you go back to those times and not think about any other worries or sorrows you have that any other series might remind you of.
If you have been watching “The Gilded Age” let me know what you think
